Yesterday, Dr. Mifsud Bonnici delivered an eloquent speech in parliament. His arguments were clear. Indeed, the efforts must be towards achieving peace. However, we must achieve peace by not pushing for war. What Ursula von der Leyen said in Strasbourg, that Europeans were living an illusion that peace is permanent, is truly conspicuous.
We must stop this idea of nuclear armaments as a form of deterrence. Also, the strategy to create a military single market is being executed only for Ursula von der Leyen to get the support of the French, and other member states to secure a second term. This is not in the interest of the collective. Ursula von der Leyen and her EPP peers are up to something bigger, much bigger than the public is aware of.
On the other hand, the Leader of the Opposition is just clueless when it comes to defence and military. And so is Dr. Adrian Delia. I would have expected Dr. Bernard Grech to speak about his views on security and defence when he attended the EPP summit last week. Alas, they both lack experience.
Nowadays, I hardly quote people unless I know that what they mean is genuine. Certainly, I am quoting Dr. Mifsud Bonnici because I know the person and his family on a personal level. We grew up in the same neighborhood ‘fuq Santa Margerita Bormla’.
